Wondering what happens at a newborn photography session? Learn what to expect, how to prepare, and how newborn sessions work with a Cape Town newborn photographer.
If you've never had professional newborn photographs taken before, it's completely normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect.
Many parents arrive at their newborn session wondering whether their baby will sleep, whether they'll cry, what they should wear, or if they'll somehow do something wrong.
The good news is that you don't need to have everything figured out before you arrive.
A newborn photography session is designed to be relaxed, unhurried, and centred around your baby's needs. My job is to guide you through the entire experience so that you can simply focus on enjoying these precious early days with your little one.
Here's what you can expect from your newborn photography session.
Once your session is booked, you'll receive information to help you prepare, including guidance on what to wear, what to bring, and how the session will flow.
Don't worry if you're feeling overwhelmed. Life with a newborn is busy, and I keep preparation as simple as possible.
You'll also have the opportunity to ask any questions before your session so that you arrive feeling confident and relaxed.
When you arrive at the studio, you'll be welcomed into a calm and comfortable space designed specifically with new families in mind.
There is no rush and no pressure.
Many parents tell me that simply sitting down with a warm drink while someone else takes the lead for a while feels like a gift during those early weeks of parenthood.
The studio is kept warm and cosy for your baby's comfort, and we move at a pace that works for them.
Your Baby Sets the Pace
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies need to sleep through the entire session.
They don't.
Every baby is different, and every session unfolds differently.
Some babies sleep deeply for most of the session. Others prefer to be awake and curious about the world around them. Both are completely normal and both can result in beautiful photographs.
There is always time for:
Feeding
Nappy changes
Cuddles
Settling and soothing
Extra comfort breaks when needed
Your baby's needs will always come first.
While those tiny newborn details are important, some of the most treasured images from a newborn session are often the family photographs.
We'll create a mixture of images that include:
Parents and baby
Siblings and baby
The whole family together
Individual portraits with Mum
Individual portraits with Dad
Don't worry if you're feeling tired or not quite like yourself yet. Most parents feel this way.
My role is to guide you into natural, flattering positions and create images that focus on connection rather than perfection.
The best newborn photographs are timeless and uncluttered.
Soft neutral colours such as cream, beige & white, photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family rather than your clothing. Greys and muted earth tones can work well too.
Comfort is just as important as style.
Choose outfits that make you feel relaxed and confident, and avoid worrying about matching perfectly. Nothing too tight or restrictive and Moms often refer shoulders covered if need be.
Coordinating is far more important than matching.
One of my favourite parts of every newborn session is documenting the tiny details that change so quickly.
Those delicate eyelashes.
The little wrinkles on their feet.
The way their fingers curl around yours.
The soft wisps of hair on their head.
These details may seem impossible to forget right now, but they change in the blink of an eye. Photographing them allows you to hold onto this season long after it has passed.
The Session Is Never Rushed
Newborn sessions typically last longer than a standard family session because babies need time.
Time to feed.
Time to settle.
Time to be held and comforted.
The goal isn't to rush through a checklist of poses. The goal is to create a relaxed environment where genuine moments can unfold naturally.
Some of the most meaningful photographs happen in the pauses between planned moments.
After your session, I carefully select and professionally edit the best images from your gallery.
Once your photographs are ready, you'll be invited to view them online and choose the collection that best suits your family.
This allows you to select the images and artwork you truly love rather than making decisions before you've seen your photographs.
A newborn photography session is about more than documenting what your baby looked like.
It's about remembering what these early days felt like.
The weight of your baby in your arms.
The way they curled into your chest.
The overwhelming love, wonder, and tenderness of welcoming a new little person into your family.
These moments pass far too quickly.
My hope is that your photographs help you return to them again and again for years to come.
If you're expecting a baby and looking for a relaxed, baby-led newborn photography experience in Cape Town, I'd love to help you preserve this beautiful chapter of your family's story.
Because while babies don't stay little forever, the memories can.
